how to try on a bra

Are you someone who despises trying on clothes while shopping –  including bras? Let me guess: You’d rather grab your size in the items you love and try everything on when you get home. Right? This technique may work for clothes, but it’s a little trickier for bras.

No two blouses have the same fit, even if they are the same size. And the same goes for bras. You can’t assume you’ll wear the same size in one brand as you would in another. Trying on bras may seem tedious, however, the process will save you frustration.

Here are four reasons why you’ll want to think twice before buying a bra without trying it on:

1.  You could waste time by needing to return it.

You likely want to skip trying on the bra to save time. But, not trying on a bra in store could actually cost you more time. You may need to return the bra if you don’t like it once you try it on at home. Not only must you go through the returns process, but you’ll have to bra shop again. Spend the extra time trying on bras, and you’ll thank yourself later.

2.  Bra brands and styles vary in fit.

No two bras – even when they are same size – are equal in fit. This is because bra sizing can vary by brand, material and style. A European bra brand will have a different sizing structure than an American brand. And, a spandex bra may fit differently in the same size as a lace bra. It’s important to try on bras instead of trusting that it will fit simply because it’s “your size.”

3.  You may love the bra, but not how it looks on you.

How you feel in a bra matters. You may love the way the bra looks on the hanger. Yet, you don’t love how it looks on you. And, that’s perfectly fine! It’s important to only buy bras that make you look and feel your best. One half of your bra’s job is to boost your confidence. The other half of its job is to provide support. If a bra isn’t doing both jobs well, it’s not the right bra for you. Of course, the only way to know if the bra suits you is to try it on. And, it’s better to find out you don’t like a bra in-store than after you buy it and get it home.

4.  Your bra size may have changed.

The size of the last bra you bought may not be the size you need now. There are many factors that can cause your bra size to change, like weight gain or loss, pregnancy, breastfeeding or menopause. It’s a good rule of thumb to get a bra fitting before starting to bra shop. This ensures you know your current bra size and can focus on only trying on the right bras.

Remember:

Trying on a bra before buying it helps ensure you leave the store satisfied. Of course, bra shopping online forces you to purchase before trying on. For this reason, it’s still a good idea to get a bra fitting if you plan to buy online. (Many stores offer bra fittings at no cost and no obligation.) This way, you aren’t guessing your bra size online. As we mentioned before, bra sizes can vary among brands. So, be sure to check the online store’s sizing chart and return policy. You’ll want to make sure the bra’s measurements align with your own and that you have the option to return the bra if it doesn’t fit.
